What is Radon?
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM) in the soil that comes from the breakdown of natural uranium. This colorless, odorless gas can seep into your home, school or place of work. As the radon decays it can get trapped in your lungs when you breathe. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has extensively researched and has listed radon as the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States after smoking. The EPA has established action levels of radon at 4 pCi/L or less. Even if you have a radon mitigation system it is important to test every two years. Testing can be done by a NRPP listed professional or you can buy do-it-yourself radon test kits, available at most hardware stores for around $40.00 (including lab fees).
When should I test my home?
If you are unsure whether your house has ever been tested before, or you are buying or selling a home, you need to have your home tested! Only after determining the level of Radon present is mitigation discussed. At that point, the best type of system for your home will be determined.
What kind of system do I need?
Absolute Radon will come to do a thorough check of your basement or crawlspace and make the correct determination of whether you need an indoor or outdoor system.
How much does it cost?
Depending on the size of your home, basement or crawlspace, Radon mitigation systems range from $900-$1300. There is financial assistance available through the City of Fort Collins through a small loan.
